As a first thought, I want to offer my heartfelt thank you to all the nurses, doctors, hospital staff, delivery drivers, grocery store employees, auto mechanics and more that are keeping our country going during this unbelievable time in history. I have family on the front lines fighting to keep our country safe and I continue to appreciate the support and selflessness that so many people are displaying.
While local government, schools and community business have closed their doors due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. Staying at home can be stressful, but the natural beauty that surrounds us offers so many wonderful options to help us relax and take a break, all while adhering to social distancing .
1. I have never seen so many of my neighbors walking with their families and pets. Get to know your neighborhood with a walk. With spring here, flowers are starting to bloom, and birds are chirping. Taking a walk, maintaining a distance of 6ft from others is a great way to see your neighborhood.
2. Local Parks that remain open, while avoiding playgrounds and basketball courts. Again, enjoying nature here in our Northern Westchester towns is great for your mental health and looking for parks outside your own town is a great way to change it up. Look for trails that are “off the beaten path” to avoid crowds. You can organize a scavenger hunts for your family, or locate a field to toss a ball, brush up on soccer skills and other sports. According to the County Parks Website, most parks that are maintained by the county are open with restroom facilities, playground facilities and indoor program and facilities are closed. Some parks that I love and are currently open include: Mianus River Gorge in Bedford, NY, Mountain Lakes Parks in North Salem, Silver Lake Preserve in White Plains and Graham Hills Park in Mt. Pleasant.
3. There’s a great app called Geocaching. It a GPS based app to locate hidden “caches” . They range in difficulty and sizes. They are located all over the world, including our community. To learn more about Geocaching, click here.
