Celebrate the Holidays in Northern Westchester

Reposted from Wee Westchester  http://www.weewestchester.com

Ahh, the holidays. Whether you’re spending time with family or friends, or volunteering time to the community, Northern Westchester has plenty of options. It’s hard to resist the magic in the air when taking in the beautiful lights and store displays, smells of favorite holiday treats or listening to holiday songs. Here are some of my favorite activities to do in Northern Westchester.

1. Mail a letter to Santa at special mailboxes set up all over Northern Westchester. Many communities offer a reply or phone call from Santa himself!
2. Pick out the perfect tree either at a nearby firehouse, local store or a local tree farm and chop it down yourself.
3. Enjoy freshly made latkes at Susan Lawrence in Chappaqua. Don’t forget the sour cream and applesauce — yum!
4. Shop local by supporting a toy store like G. Willikers Toys and Games and Little Joe’s Books in Katonah, Auntie Penny and Hall of Scoops in Chappaqua, Briarcliff Toy Shop in Briarcliff Manor, Learning Express in Bedford, Kidz Toyz in Mount Kisco. Of course, there are many other local stores not specializing in toys that you can support, too!
5. Participate in a holiday sing-along while enjoying high tea (hot chocolate with marshmallows for the little ones!) at Caramoor in Katonah through Dec. 16.
6. Pile in the car dressed in PJ’s with thermoses of hot chocolate and graham crackers and take a closer look at some of the awesomely decorated houses. They might be a small drive, it’s totally worth it. My favorites include:
                    –  21 North Kensico Road, White Plains, – It’s decorated like a gingerbread house with Gumdrops that line the roof. Large peppermint lights line the white picket fence and much more. If you tune your radio to 107.7, the light display blink with the beat of classic Christmas songs.
                     – 90 Iroquois Road in Ossining is a house full of decorations and lights that you can walk around and take pictures. You won’t be disappointed.
7. Spend a day at Lasdon Park in Katonah, where you can visit with Santa, check out the train show, listen to holiday stories, and go on an evening wagon ride through the festively lit woods.
8. Treat yourself to the some of the best hot cocoa around, including, Tazza in Katonah or Armonk, Jean Jacques in Pleasantville, The Bedford Gourmet in Bedford, The Reading Room in Katonah, The Black Cow  in Pleasantville, Susan Lawrence in Chappaqua and many many more.
